remote access software

DGE Automation, Inc. is able to provide your organization with a number of useful approaches to remote LAN access.  The most common of these choices and also the most secure is the Virtual Private Network (VPN).  There are various approaches to the VPN but for the end user it is important to understand the general concept of the tool and how it is used.

WHAT IS A VPN?

THE PROCESS

VPN is an acronym for the term Virtual Private Network. It can be described as a private network that uses a public network (usually the Internet) to connect remote sites or users together. This is an alternative to WAN (wide area network) which uses a more expensive leased line approach. The VPN works by routing “virtual” connections established in a private network through the public Internet to a remote user. There are various approaches to a VPN depending on the needs of the network operator and the remote user. WHY VPN?
A VPN can allow remotely located staff, vendors, project partners etc. to communicate and interact with an established network and it’s selected components. Because the VPN is independent of geography, has 24/7 availability, and flexibly secured it can provide a variety of services to unique clients globally dispersed. It could be as simple as one roaming salesperson or as complex as a global project with layers of shared applications the VPN can be designed to meet the goals of most operations.
The only way to properly deploy the appropriate VPN for your organization is to evaluate the needs of your operation and it’s remote clients. At that point you must evaluate the hardware involved on both ends, the operating systems on both ends, the Internet service on both ends, the applications software involved and more. Performance, security, and limitations of the existing infrastructure always dictate how you move ahead. Often this process is short and simple but there are a variety of unforeseen problems that can crop up if you do not carefully evaluate these elements. Whether in-house or through a vendor such as DGE, it is important to evaluate your existing systems and requirements first, to save time and money later. Once you have finished this part of the evaluation it will be a much simpler task to choose among various VPN approaches. Often something in the initial evaluation will mandate a certain VPN approach, if this is the case your choices will be easily defined. If you have very few limitations placed by your existing technology the decision becomes one of ROI, performance, and security demands. We can help you in this evaluation. Although we have a set of vendor partners our evaluation is dependant on your needs not theirs. DGE can help you properly scale and deploy your remote systems in the most cost effective and secure manner.
